GLEANINGS FROM THE BIBLE READING CHALLENGE: LESSONS FROM THE BOOK OF JOHN

After eight years of reading the Bible from cover to cover, I still realise that I don’t yet know the Bible as I ought to, no wonder apostle Paul says “how unsearchable are the mysteries of the gospel…”.

As the Lord led me this year, instead of going through the conventional bible reading in a year which I did for the last eight years, I joined a Bible reading challenge for three years, and as we just finished reading the book of John, permit me to share with you some of the lessons the Lord taught me.

Lesson 1: I need to bear my cross daily, so I can be like Jesus. (John 19:17) “And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha”

Lesson 2: We’re all living a prophecy each day, so, let me ask you – what prophecy is your life living out? (John 19:24) “They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.”

Lesson 3: The Son of God, who turned water to wine, drank sour wine (vinegar) on the day of His death just because of you and me Can you imagine that? (John 19:30) “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”

Lesson 4: This got me thinking about the marriage supper of the Lamb in heaven, when we will all get to drink the new wine with Jesus, and I could not but pray that “LORD, I want to drink the new wine with You, in heaven, in Jesus’ name!” (John 19:30)

Lesson 5: Sin breaks the bone of conviction in any believer, and I declare that ‘No bone of mine shall be broken by sin, in Jesus’ name! Amen.’ (John 19:36) “For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.”

Lesson 6: Everytime I’ve read John 19:1,11,12-16; the question that has always been on my heart, is “what exactly is the sin of Pilate?” let’s look at these scriptural passages together: “Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him… Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin… Whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Cæsar. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! But they cried out, Away with him , away with him , crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.”

It was as I brooded on this chapter that the Holy Spirit opened my eyes to his sin, which was primarily the sin of man – pleasing. This led me to prayer. And I pray for you that you will not sin against God by seeking to please men. Beloved, don’t seek to please men!
Seek to please God!
Say like Peter and John – We’d rather obey God than man!

NB: Pilate already had blood on his hands for fearing men!
Pilate feared Caeser, more than he feared God!
Beware of the fear of man, beloved

Lesson 7: I realised that people (the natural man) always prefers a robber to the Son of God! What do I mean by this? Men simply prefer the robber to the redeemer because of their sins, remember that birds of a feather flow together (John 18:40)
Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

The Bible Reading Challenge continues, if you would like to be a partaker, you can signify in the comment box.
