TALES OF NIFE[EPISODE 1] BY IFEOLUWA MAJEKODUNMI

“Father in Jesus name, the eternal One, we thank you for”…

That was my family having the usual night prayers and all that was going through my mind was DJ’s image…

Those pair of sneakers looked so perfect on him, the Jersey he wore revealing his broad chest made him look so manly and yea, he spoke with an accent or was he just trying to give me a good first impression?…

Ayodeji Akintunde, whom we often called DJ is a guy I met at the National Skilled Writers Competition (NSWC) practice. He wasn’t one of the competitors but a coach, a young coach, as he had won the NSWC consecutively for four times, which earned him fame as he had been invited to several TV shows to speak on his writing skills…

My heart was melting already…this guy seemed so cool I thought to myself as the loud AMEN! from my parents and younger sister which signified closure of the prayers brought me back to my senses.

“Nife, I didn’t hear your Amen”… that was my dad speaking with a stern look on his face and that of my mum….

Amen! Amen! I shouted trying to fake some sort of seriousness…

I retired to bed with my sister that night looking forward to see DJ in my dream… I was trying to hide my smile and unusual happiness from my busybody sister, Toluwanimi, fondly called Nimi.

It was another day to prepare for the NSWC coming up in few months, I was chosen as the representative of my team, team Louis (named after one of the late coaches). It had become a norm for all 12 teams to meet at the large ‘Fame Hall’ everyday at 10am so as to get used to everything partaining the competition.

I hope DJ comes today… I said loudly to myself as I was slowly styling my hair, admiring the beautiful flowery dress I was putting on and smiling at the long mirror in front of me.

“Who is DJ? Sister Nife” [as she often addressed me]…. that was Nimi asking.

Oh no! what do I tell this girl now, I wonder why younger sisters always poke their noses into what’s not, I thought to myself…how do I explain to a 7-year old girl who a crush is?

DJ is errrm… I was trying to look for the right words to say to her…

“DJ is DJ (Disc jockey), those that play songs at parties,” I told her, trying to read her facial expression to see if she was impressed with the answer.

“You are having a party? I thought you were going for a competition practice… I’m going to tell mummy,” she shouted, running out of the room.

What a kid she is truly, I thought to myself…I wasn’t bothered about her telling my mum, I’ve got my ways around that. Moreover, my parents never had time for important discussions with us let alone some irrelevant talk about a DJ who’s a DJ.

My mum is a music minister, always preparing for one ministration or the other… my dad never had time also, his ministry was always the excuse too, my parents are christians and have tried in their own way to bring us up in the way of the Lord but little did they know that…

*********

“You are a very fast learner, your improvement in the last few weeks is amazing”. That was DJ commending me.

He began to coach me since he asked me few weeks ago if I’d like him to be my personal coach, of course, I said yes.

He gave me a hug looking at the write-up I composed, it seemed like a casual hug to him but not to me… I wanted more than DJ just being my coach, DJ is the type of guy every young girl would like to have as a ‘boo’ as my friends called it but it looked like all he wanted was just to coach me or so I thought…

“Alright Nife, we’ll see some other time,” DJ said as his voice broke me from my unhealthy thoughts…

“Yea, thank you so much DJ, see you,” I replied coldly trying to conceal my emotions as I picked my bag to leave.

“And there’s something vital I want to discuss with you when next we see…” He was looking straight into my eyes

“Vital? Alright…” I said, shrugging my shoulders as I turned to leave.

All through my walk to the house his thoughts kept running my mind, I was really beginning to fall in love with DJ…  all of sudden, I began to hear a voice that nearly threw me off balance…

whose voice was it? And what’s it DJ wants to tell me?…
